Re: Spavin shoes - lateral extentions

I second learning to trim/shoe your horse yourself. There are two dissection clinics coming up in your area and that would be a good way for you to learn mechanics of the inside of a hoof (to be better educated on what could help). There are also some good two/three week courses that would show you how to trim and apply shoes (NB has a great one from what I hear) yourself. You could also go further and go to farrier school to learn to forge your own shoes if you want to invest in that.

Guessing at what shoes would work-very dangerous but changing your horses trim/shoes/pads this many times in one month on the advise of people online who have not even touched your horsewill cause irreversible damage to your horse. I hope you see that.

Your horse needs time...not new shoes.

Re: Spavin shoes - lateral extentions

Guys, are you reading my post ??? I said HIND shoes.... She is very much due on the hind.

My current farrier does not make shoes and he agreed i should find a pair and he will set them on.

How is it that wrong ?

Come on people ! Jake - others have offered to make shoes for me so if you do not want to do it, that's ok.
No need to get nasty with me.

Re: Spavin shoes - lateral extentions

Why does the horse now need Spavin shoes/Lateral Extension shoes behind?

Do you want a lateral toe extension only, or the lateral branch with extension?

Re: Spavin shoes - lateral extentions

She has low grade spavins in her hocks and was injected with cortisone a fiew months back.

Vet suggested wider lateral branches on the outside.

She was shod once with a boxed/rolled toe & trailers.
He advised lateral extentions don't alter the hoof flight as much and offer support instead of a simple gait correction.

Re: Spavin shoes - lateral extentions

Do you want the lateral branch forged out, if so do you want the taper at the foot side or the ground side? Or do you want to extend the branch by fullering it? That would provide more traction but do you want that? Or do you just want to add a trailer to the shoe? Should that be a straight trailer or one bend laterally?

What about rolling the medial toe instead of extending the lateral branch?

By the way did you check whether or not the hinds are straight? Chances are the hind feet supinate. That needs to be corrected and may well be all you have to do.......

Mr. Aalders, you are 100% right.
It is striking to me how you can see through my horse's case.

Her feet & hocks do supinate outwards on the '' push '' phase.
She is naturally toed out, more on the left leg and narrow based.

Her heels are now underrun though. These pictures date back in May when this mess with her fore feet started.

My vet advised to shoe her with rollers ( bananas ) on all 4 * if i could find someone local to do it * or a '' extention latérale '' wich translated to '' lateral fullered '' ??? Excuse my french.

I like the idea that the roller provides early but slow breakover so it does not alter the stride as much as a plain square toe.

What do you suggest i do ?

PS - Thank you so much for all your precious help. I have ordered the rollers and can't wait to put them on. Folks at grand circuit LOVED your idea with the 1/2 spider plate Jay.
