I just learned how to make the lat support hind last night. Pretty psyched about getting a start on it.

I miss marked my nail holes when I went to mark them.

Any tips on marking nail holes in regaurds to distances and whatnot?

Re: handmades

Josh there are a ton of different ways to mark your nail holes...really it just takes a ton of shoes. Go slow, develop your eye, I think in the long run this is best, JMO. The number one thing that helped me was I just made the decision to build every slider I put on for a full year, nail holes got to be smack on...When you are just practicing building shoes its tougher, you have to really concentrate on building shoes for feet.

Re: handmades

I guess it is just me, but when I handmake a shoe, the nailholes are dictated to me by the whiteline. Most handmades are for crummy feet, otherwise they get a keg. I believe the best reason to use and make a handmade is because of the shape and condition the feet are in, not just to build one to look at symmetrically.

Some of the reasons i would use HAND-MADES
i would have a better selection of different sections to choose
to suit the horses feet 3/4x3/8 , 7/8x3/8, 1x3/8 ect concave

measurments i can be exactly were i want to be
machine shoes dont give me that (bar shoes esp)

i can have better nail-holes fit and pitch and placment
for horses that need extra pitch and feet that dont hold up so good

i would prefer my own clips over the machine shoes (size, shape, position)
and when having the foot in mind

i can make a balanced shoe easier to fit a foot
thats not so balanced better

hope i made some sence

Re: handmades

Smitty, you always make sence. My comments were towards building every shoe to look like the last one. Again conditions dictate what shoe is needed and where the nails need to go.

I had a full series of pics on this horse, but something happened and a bunch of my pictures got corrupted. But this was a good case for a handmade shoe IMO. The medial side was all torn up from how he was shod before. The heel nail in the new shoe was pitched backward and extra coarse so that I could get the shoe back under the foot.

Re: handmades

Joey, really big improvement in support for sure. I personally would of not creased the medial side and just punched it and maybe crease the lateral like you did all the way to the heels. My nails in the medial toe would of been more to the inside web and I would of stuck more shoe out the medial toe, BUT thats just me. The length of toe on this foot looks to be a TWH????
P. S. Looking back at the finished foot, if you would of punched closer to the inside the nails would not of had to be so high.

Why would you not have creased the medial side?

I really wish I had the solar pictures so you could really get an idea for how bad this foot was. The medial heel was also sheared up about 3/4". I didn't want to mess around too much, just center the shoe around P3 and add a little lateral support.

This one is a TWH, and (IIRC) a RWC Trail Pleasure horse. I am actually gonna shoe him again tomorrow, I'll get some more pictures, but I'm going to Hawaii early Tues morning and probably won't have time to post pictures before I leave.

Re: handmades

You have a good trip to Hawaii! I was referring to more shoe out at the medial toe. The photo with the patch , I can't see the edge of the shoe under it? This is where I personally would of put more shoe, hence why the plane stamp toe nails with maybe some relief hammered or ground into it. How long are the toes behind, they look really long? Again have a safe trip!

Re: handmades

I dunno how long they are, I've never measured. If it helps, the finished shoe is only about 13-1/2". But, he moves nice, and the foot is more normal now.

I intend to enjoy myself, this is my first break in about 3 years.

Re: handmades

Very cool Jeff, though might I recommend raking the leaves up around the forge? I drop shoes once in a while. Dunno about you.
