Re: Lame horse from nail
At this pont a good set of radiographs would be in order as well as some systemic antibiotics. After I had a look at the films then I could make some more complete recommendations.
What are you wrapping the hoof with? Perhaps this added wall support is what the horse is looking for since this is a relatively sizeable wall defect. M. W. Myers, D.V.M. |

I am wrapping the hoof with vet wrap and duck tape over that. I put cotton in the hole with iodine on it before I wrap it. If I leave the wrap off she is fine for a couple of days until the hole gets packed with dirt. then she start limping again. Thats why I ordered the hoof putty so I can put that in the hole so i won't have to wrap it anymore.

SillyMae
As has been noted already by Ray, if you fill that hole with the puddy it'll be no different than if it was filled with dirt. Same pressures will be applied to the live tissues. You want to figure out a way to support the hoof without filling the hole for two reasons. Firstly, because filling the hole to support the hoof is causing pain and secondly because if the hole is full of stuff it won't be able to fill in with new growth. That's why everyone has suggested the things that have been suggested. I felt like maybe if the reasoning was explained a little more it might be easier to understand the suggestions. I believe a shoe/hospital plate has been suggested at least a couple times, I think that if you went this way you would not only be better able to take care of the hoof. It would end up being a lot less expensive in the long run and your horse would be more comfortable quicker. As for the vet saying X rays are not necessary, just say " I don't care if they're necessary, I want them", They'll take the pictures for you. Hope this helps David

Re: Lame horse from nail
Just wanted to let you all know that my farrier is coming tomorrow morning to put a medicine plate (or something like that) and shoes back on my horse. I am so scared about putting the shoes back on but I know its the right thing to do right now. Thanks again for all the advice and wisdom you all gave me. I will give you a update a a few weeks after I see how everything goes.

Re: Lame horse from nail
My ferrier came out on Oct 29th and put shoes back on Candy. He covered the hole I am guessing with some type of glue then put a plate on the shoe and put it on her foot. Sorry not very good terms but I was to nervous to ask questions. On Nov. 8th I rode her. She did great. No lameness or any other problems. When he comes back out I will get some better details on what he did. I did notice when he trimmed her that the hole was not as deep so that made me feel better. I am hoping when he trims her next time that it is almost gone.
thanks again for all your help and pushing me to put her shoes back on her...
