Laminitis and X rays Too

On 8-31-09 vet came out, diagnosed Laminitic on both fores, pulse up and over weight. Stalled with Lilly pads bed shavings deep on very strict diet cut hay to 8 flakes (soaked) daily. On 10-8-08-09 vet revisited took x-rays, Spoke to farrier on 10-9-09 discussed plan for shoeing...
Mare is doing better vet will revisit on 11-10-09 for more x-rays.
My album has pictures or her shoes and pads.

I have a great farrier and vet I trust them completely.
I have also come to trust and appreciate your opinions too.

Thank you in advance

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Seem to have a good safe sole depth ...P3 seems a very little out of line ,but this may only be because of the long toe..looks very healthy not like the picture i get to see here sometimes
looking at the shoeing pictures it seems that the long toe is a thing of the past..good job ,not sure what others think, but I would float the dorsal wall a bit .

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Can I get some input on these rads? I just added the one at the bottom and I noticed there is a shadow about the size of a nickle on the coffin bone.

Thank You in advance
Terri

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Well, some input would be that the X ray is not taken at straight angles. The horizontal marker in the X ray block is not visible making it hard to determine exact sole depth. Also the marker of the dorsal hoofwall is missing.

For me as a shoer those are bigger problems than the shadow you mentioned.

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Just for the record there is a lot of information on this website that you can look at. I appreciate that you are worried about your horse and are looking for some answers. However we are behind keyboards and not in a position to offer any help to your horse. We can share information, that may help you to assess the situation and seek appropriate help.

Please do some searching on this website and if that leaves you with more specific questions we'll be glad to answer them if we can.

Unhappy Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Farrier put pads & shoes on 10-10-09 scheduled 6 wk reset, he called on 11-13-09 said that he had forgotten his kids b-day and his wife would kill him if he missed his girls b-day party on the 21st.
No comment...I'll say this, I found out that his wife may need to follow him for a while...

On 11-17- I woke to find my mare was not moving around very well at all, keep in mind that she is stalled, bedded deep shaving still,
Vet came back out on 11-20-09 took more x rays, floating teeth etc... She was ****ed off to say the lest, mare is to be reset every 4 wks, she (the vet) called one of her local farriers he came in and put a backwards shoe on her no pad, no sole pak or anything.
Vet's even more ****ed off so she calls one of the guys that supposed to be "The Best" in town, he says that he'll be here today 11-27-09, he was a no show. So mare appears to be comfortable at the moment.
Vet ordered Natural Balance trim with a sole pak or pads for the next 7 months resets @ 4ks.
I'm so ****ed too, I have spent $500.00 to just on books getting ready to learn this trade myself. I going to my first clinic in December... If I have to hitchhike to get the clinics I will. hoping to have a little guidance from a few folks also. Farriers talk about horse owners man if some of them only knew, but then again I live in the deep south, you can't expect too much from some folks..

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

From your initial post, it appears your veterinarian suspects a metabolic basis to this situation. Eight flakes of soaked hay daily will not solve the problem as you are now beginning to notice. Shoeing alone will not solve this problem until you get the metabolic situation under control.
Proper protein supplementation with carbohydrate reduction is the main key. Vitamin and mineral balance is also crucial. Even if you remove most of the soluble carbohydrates from the diet, eight flakes of hay daily will probaly be too much total carbs regardless of its NSC content.

Good idea Butterfly, just go to a few clinics and learn to do it yourself, there is nothing to it

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Not sure I favor the comment about the Deep South. I grew up there (Alabama and Louisiana) and generally found everyone to be a lot more helpful than they are in many other areas.
I have a farrier I work with here in Virginia who has a good friend that is an excellent farrier in South Carolina. I can find his address and number if you can tell me where you are in SC. Perhaps he can help. He is not going to put a 'backwards shoe' on your horse, he will trim and shoe appropriately to radiographs when they are available and I can assist on how they should be positioned and set up for farriers if you like.

Re: Laminitis and X rays Too

Rick, I lol, I do have a sense of humor too. All bS a side It will take lot more than a few clinics, you guys have been in it for many many years and are still learning it's like life you never stop learning....
I know who to contact for a good laugh from now on, I sure do need it about now. Thank you..

Dr. Meyers, Yes I have learned a lot since last contact with you and I thank you. I have her stalled cutting her hay back slowly she is on Remission 2x daily, with Thyro-L 2x daily,
per vet instruction slowly taking her completely off of her feed working our way down to 4 flakes a day..
I will contact you PM with my information...

Regards
Terri
