Wire for crack fixing
Was wondering what type of wire yall use for pulling cracks together. I saw a thread with some nice pictures, that I am going to try, but I have one that I shod with a pretty ugly quarter crack on the hind. Put a shoe on, floated the crack and used a dremel to open it up as part of the hoof wall was getting dirt packed underneath, and was in danger of abcessing. Put six short screws in hoof and put wire around screws to pull it together some. However, the wire was not the best, don't know what it was, just some thin stuff owner had in shed. When I went to try and tighten the wire, it kept wanting to break. Any suggestions?

Re: Wire for crack fixing
I use stainless steel piano wire. I will check size in the morning, but I just ask for stainless steel piano wire at the hard ware store. I also use a small # 6 * 1/4” stainless steel sheet metal screw. I like them a lot better than the wood screws.

Re: Wire for crack fixing
Try some aircraft safety wire. Comes in various diameters, recommed .032 or .041. Its made from stainless steel and is tough stuff. Will twist quite tight without breaking. Hope this helps.

Re: Wire for crack fixing
Do you know what the differences are between the two, Bradley? Why is one better than the other? Honestly, they look the same to me.
Tenderhoof does allow you the option of buying the crosscut bur and the drill bit though, which is nice for one stop shopping.

The Soundhorse sutures are wiggly like wet spaghetti, and it is hard enough to get the suture wires through the drill hole as it is. (not really hard, but you know, the foot aint a block of wood clamped to the bench) The wiggly product is in my estimation unusable with out major time playing with it. Even then ???? And YES, I like that, at Tenderhoof you can buy all you need, and order it online.

Re: Wire for crack fixing
I am working with Mike Nolan on his hoof plate to get things a bit less "flash and show" advertising and get down to the real advantages of his product. It is the best quarter and toe crack repair you can apply. It will not break, the horse will have fast return of comfort and use, and you will not have to touch it for at least three months, usually four. That said, you do have to perform a very good trim and shoe application to leave this package on that long and the hoof will grow more than usual during this time period. You also need a strong nail so the nails will not shear if the horse is used during the duration of the plate application.
