I'm surprised our profession qualified for that show. I think they allready covered most of the really bad stuff.

Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)
Man I hope they get to follow him to a barn where the horses have been out in a boggy pasture and have been rollin in the mud and are brought into the barn with muck up to their knees, as well as an inch of gunk stuck to their dorsal walls.
One or two of the feet should have pus draining from abscesses and a smelly rotten dog wandering around, always upwind of the bent over farrier. Throw in a horse with the snots all wiped over his forelegs and one big smear down your shoulder and back (or snuffled through your hair) then snorted out all over the front of your shirt. And the other horse a mare in heat fighting the same cold, but having a bout of diarrhea, which has trickled down her hind legs and the soppy nasty tail swipes across your face. Don't forget the gelding that just has to pee and splatters all over your tool box, as well as his legs which you haven't even picked up yet! But as soon as you do you recognize the wonderful aroma of thrush! I wonder if the TV crew would be brave enough to film the um, uh- gunky appendage geldings are often noted for? Or at least the "tar" on their inside hind legs? Of course they might film the horse owner that thinks they are helping the farrier by hosing off the horse just before doing footwork, or the ones that brush the horse while the farrier is underneath; dusting the farrier with a fine coat of hair and grime. Then to combat the hordes of pests winging around the beast, the horseowner lets loose with a cloud of toxic chemicals for the farrier to choke in. The finishing touch of course should be the farrier "smokin' on the shoes and smiling as THAT particular smell wafts by! Nope, I don't think our job is dirty enough for a TV show either! ;) :p |

Kim,
I thought you lived in Florida? It sounds like west Virginia, or my home county of Ashtabula, Ohio. Do you know what Ashtabula means in the aincient Erie and Iriquios indian tongue? Place where ****** people congregate and propagate exponentially! :D Jason |

Jason,
Yup,I do! But I used to live in upstate New York, and did a stint in Nevada for a year, as well as Connecticuit and Pennsylvania (not as a farrier, but still associatied with the horse world). Seems like it never changes where ever you go! Ashtabula? Hmmm reminds me of a ditty Now how did that go? Was it: Mitcha cah bull, I live in ash ta bula, bippety boppety boo! Put it together and what have ya got? Bippety boppety boo! Nah, mebbe not! :p |

Lets not forget the wonderful smell of the burning manure pile. And that the owner always seems to stoke it the day we are to work in their barn and the wind is blowing the smoke down the aisle way.

Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show schedule information directly from the AFA
There may be a schedule conflict. I posted the schedule information directly from the AFA Website. Discovery Channel does not have this espisode on their Web Site. I'll post updated schedule information as soon as I can get it.

I did catch a video clip on the Discovery Channel with Mark in it. It's in the works. Waiting on a schedule update still.

I have already set tivo to record Aug 23 at 8:00 central. The description only talked about an exterminator, but it was a dirty jobs episode on the discovery channel.

Ironworker,
Isn't TIVO the greatest invention since flush toilets? I can hardly bear to watch regular TV anymore. I try to fast forward thru the commercials anyway, but it just bonks at me  If I had a nickel for every advertising dollar lost to TIVO I wouldn't have to work for the rest of my life, as long as I'm dead by Thursday... ;) |

The poor guy got his butt kicked, though he was a trooper.
My wife agrees, horseshoers have a trick pelvis... :D Jason |

my wife and I thought it was hilarous when the guy singed his eye brows lighting the forge. overall thought it was good they picked a really good person to use as a ferrier, pretty good sport.

Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)
Loved the show, had me laughing most of the time. Singed eyebrows, trick pelvis, speedy trips in the truck to the barns. He has a nice shop, I liked the shoes and nice barns to work in. Not too much of a dirty job. The end of the show when he tells the minis to trust him that he has been trained to put the shoes on was great. :D
I also liked the line "You know your a farrier when you wash your hands before you go to the bathroom." |
Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)
Phil,
If I'm not mistaken, that line was written by Henry Heymering, and is on this sight somewhere in a list entitled " You might be a horseshoer if'... Maybe it wa Ray Miller's, but the whole list is here! The show was good! Jason |
Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)

Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)
how bout when your holding up a hind leg and horse decides that is time to take a dump down your back or in your boots and you decide i'd rather hold onto leg than start all over again

Re: Dirty Jobs Television Show/August 23, 2005; 8 pm (central time)
We all know that once you put that foot down, it's going right into the pile he just created, sometimes it's easier to just hold on, and keep nailin'. On the other hand a couple of weeks ago, I was shoeing a Percheron for a client that was trying to sell it for someone else. Had the vet out and drugged him, by the time I was on the last hind foot driving nails, the drugs were wearing off and he was getting a little fidgety. So instead of dropping the foot and fighting him to pick it back up, I just hung and and drove nails. On the last nail, the bastard starting urinating all over the back of my pants, I just kept driving nails. I should've known he had to pee, by the way he was jerking on me, but he was jerking on me anyway so who could tell. I came home that night and my wife said, "that's a different smell, what hell happened to you?"
I just rolled my eyes and took a shower. Dave |
