I got a call from my friend, Bill Chambers, he's looking to employ 1-2 Farriers and 2-3 apprentices. Bill runs one of the largest horse concessions on Mackinac Island here in Michigan. The Island is one of the premier tourist destinations in the Midwest. No autos allowed. Everything is horsepowered. The Island is only accessable by ferry. Bill is a Michigan State Alumni Veterinarian and his family has been on the Island for generations. He's the real deal, runs 300 head of horses. Has a shoeing shop with every imaginable tool. This is a 40 hour a week job with scheduled breaks and a real "lunch hour". If anybody wants to work on horses that "work for a living" this is the place. All the horses are shod on a 4-5 week schedule. Per my suggestion, Bill said, for the right guys, he would be willing to pay the full horseshoeing school tuition, if they would come and work for him. Oh did I mention there is about 1000 college co-eds that also work on the Island and the gals out number the guys about 3 to 1. Oh, if I was only 35 years younger. Dr. Bill Chambers phone number is 906 847 3307. If you give him a call tell him I sent ya. Brian Robertson

These are not just horses; these would be mostly draft or draft crosses. Talk about getting good experience with huge feet. As well as having a good time. I believe this is where they first developed using Polyurethane to shoe horse. From what I'm told, they dip or mold some sort of plastic around steel shoes. These horses are mostly run on blacktop roads.

My wife use to drive taxi on the island while she was away from Michigan State for the summer. She has some wild stories. I think she drove horses for 14-16 hours a day, partied the rest of the time, and got some sleep somewhere in between.

Check this out> only for 6 months a year, mostly drafts, if you happen not to be shoeing, then you are allowed to do barns and all the rest. All this for 15 bucks an hour. Yeah right. Good for beginners, though.
