I have a 5yr old arab x welsh gelding that has just been diagnosed with navicular syndromme in both front legs, my vet has told me he will be on box rest for prob min 6 months but can be taken out for walks on the lead rein for 10 mins as long as i can keep him quiet and not jumping around as thus will make the dammage to his DDFT worse. i have had the x-rays done and it appears worse in his right hoof. he has had a Cartrophen jab each wk for the last 4 wks and my vet came and treated him with Tildren on thursday, has any one used this drug and how have you found it on your horse. i know all cases are different but i am finding it hard to find much about it on the net. I cant bare the thought of maybe he cant be ridden again as that would make him a very expensive pet and all though i would keep him as that if i could my funds just wont stretch to that. the worry is that he is so young and from looking back on videos that we have filmed him he appears to have started with it any thing up to maybe 2 yrs ago. my vet has also talked about de-nerving himas a last resort do you know any thing about this?
Please help me!

I have found that no medication will do much if the hoof is not balanced ideally for the horse. That does not mean "eyeballing" the hoof and knocking off some horn. That means taking properly positioned radiographs for shoeing and proceeding accordingly.
Since Tildren is a drug used to re-establish bone mass in the face of uncontrolled bone resorption and navicular disease is actually a soft tissue inflammatory response resulting in bone loss at its end point, there is no valid theoretical reason to use it.
Neurectomies are at best controversial and at worst a disaster. They are reserved for last ditch efforts for horses that will not see much use.
