View Full Version : Can I prevent a 1/4 crack from moving? Will Lent's scotch bottom shoe...

Hello!

Well, we weathered a case of gravel back in January. It is now growing down the hoof wall. No damage done to coronary band, it doesn't look like anyhow. Thanks for all the good advice during the ordeal. It healed up real nice.

Just a questions regarding a lateral hoof crack.

Is there anything that I can put on it to prevent it from moving further up the hoof wall? (epoxy of sorts, names of products)

I've had him on Farrier's Formula since Sept 04, and I can see the better growth coming down from the coronary band. I am afraid that the crack might make it's way into the new growth and just keep on going.

He is an 18.2, 2,100 lb Percheron gelding that I use for riding and driving. No hard pavement pounding, but since show season is coming up, I've been lunging him at the canter and riding him more, which leads to more wear and tear on the feet, which makes me worry about the crack...

I have my farrier scheduled to come out in the next week or so to put shoes on (regular keg shaped) to help with wear and tear, but in the fall I was considering putting on a different type of shoe.

One other question, any comments on Will Lent's mild scotch bottom shoe? I think it is Die 2. It doesn't have the flares or flanges on it, yet is a little squared. I want to be competitive, yet I do not want the full scotch shoes I see at the bigger draft shoes.

Any thoughts or feedback on that shoe would be appreciated as well.

Thanks for your time and feedback!

Tiffany

You can manage cracks like those fairly simply by rounding in the hoof wall at the bearing surface. That takes a lot of pressure off the crack and helps prevent it from continuing further up :) . You can also rasp a thin line across the top of the crack, perpendicular to it, to help halt its progress (this can work for most surface-type cracks), along with rounding the bottom edge.

The off hind looks like it will do well with just a rounded hoof wall edge and dealing with the flares that seem to be trying to form there.

The near hind has already flaked off, it looks like, so just keep the edges smooth and round in the hoof wall edges on the bearing surface, paying close attention to it as the chipped area grows out closer to the ground (so you can keep on top of it and keep rounding in as necessary).

Hello Jeanie, and thank you for your reccomendations. I've attached another picture of his hind feet together. He naturally stands with his hocks a bit together, with kind of encourages that flaring type growth on the outside edge.

Thanks again for the tips. This board has been very helpful and informative.

Again, does anyone have any experience with Will Lent's Scotch Bottom compromise type Die 2, I think?

It looks like, from the photos, that perhaps your horse is standing toed out because the outside wall of the hooves are longer than the inside. Have your farrier be sure that both inside and outside wall lengths are equal.

Thank you Gwen for the response. That is his pretty much natural hoof placement on the rears.

Farrier came yesterday and took off some of the outside flares.

I appreciate everyone's comments!

Hi Tiffany,

What is a Will Lent's mild scotch bottom shoe???

Thanks,

I assume Ron that the Die 2 shoe has less of a heel calk then the Die 1's. I have never used any but have talked w/ ppl that use them mainly in the show ring in halter and hitch classes or w/ daily work horses in muddy or swampy land.

Because I know how much difficulty you furriners(sic) have sometimes understanding the nuances of the Anglo-English language :D , I would like to add that Will Lent is a fine fellow who manufactures a wide variety of shoes for drafters.

So now you have it. You know who Will Lent is and what his mild scotch bottom shoe is. And, with the demonstrable ac*umn that you regularly display on this forum, I am sure that you will be able to put all of this information together and arrive at a satisfactory conclusion to your original question :D .

Should you require artistic renditions of the aforementioned shoe, please send $100.00US, cash, good check, or money order, to me at my undisclosed s-mail address. Upon receipt of said funds, I will send the requested material "first carabou available" which will insure delivery sometime. Or not.
