My 20 year old gelding started limping the other day and is getting worse as days go by. I cleaned his hoof and found a very soft spot in the middle of his sole. I can press it in with my fingers and it obviously hurts. It is more oblong then round. What the heck is going on and what should I do for him. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. He was just trimmed on the 21st of March and my farrier didn't say anything to me about it.

OK, no one has an answer.

But this is what I found last night. I have it wrapped. Will stop tonight and get some betadine and better wrapping supplies and treat it that way. I have to assume it was an abscess that has broken open.

Call your vet and gets xrays right away. This does not look like an absess exit to me.

I second that; definately have a vet out as soon as possible to take a look.

Vet has been called and is coming out this afternoon. Thanks for your input. I'm really worried :(

I wish I could say not to worry too much, but worrying keeps our horses in good health, and with the vet coming out, your horse will be in good hands. I'm hoping for the best for you and your gelding!

Looks like an absess blow out to me. I had a case just like this abouit a year ago. I swore it was an absess. I recommended to the customer to call a vet since it was in sensitive structure. Vet came out an believe it or not it was a bad case of thrush. I probably would of questioned it, but vet was very expierenced and very well known. we treated for thrush, once it dried out he was fine. In 2 weeks i did put a W shoe on him just to protect toe. Keep him as dry as possible. Is he pastured or stalled. Foot looks real moist how long had it been that way.
