I have a 19 year old arab who foundered about a month and a half ago. I had his blood tested at BET labs. My vet said all was normal except the cortisol reading of 31.7000 in the am and 31.9000 in the pm. This indicates that there was almost no change in cortisol levels during the day. The insulin level was normal as was thyroid. My questions are; what is the normal level of cortisol ? and does my horse have cushings?
He shows no signs of long hair or other symtoms other than the founder which was brought on by too much alfalfa and green grass. Is it true that Purina Senior feed will not aggravate or cause founder ? He is in a dry lot and fed grass hay. I am treating him with vitex or chaste berry fed 1 tsp twice daily in half a cup of purina senior feed. Should I also give him licorice root?
Thanks

Since these boards really are for shoeing issues, your best resource to answer all those type questions is the yahoo.com groups, EquineCushings discussion forum. I didn't really mean to start a veterinary/nutritional/metbolic discussion here.
