What type of Keg shoes do you use, why, and what are you paying?

I know, its a loaded question..

I have not used a ton of differant shoes, maybe only 2 or 3 differant kinds. I seem to like the St Croise Forge Extra EZ's cuz they seem to fit real well out of the box and are wider, yet thicker than most shoes that wide. I dont like that the nail holes are set so far in, could be trouble for thin walled horses. I picked up some in NewHolland PA (Amsterdam Ferrier Supply) when I was down at the auction last week and they were 62.00 for 25lb of 1's and 70.00 for a 25lb box of 00Hinds. This seems a little high.

How about you?

Go to the Marketplace here on the site and you can easily compare prices of just about anything. remember that you will have to also allow for shipping costs.

Generally, I prefer the St. Croix Eventer over the Xtra E-Z. I also carry Kerkharts, St. Croix lites and lite rims, aluminum shoes in a variety of configurations , urethane shoes, and both aluminum and steel bar stock(I hate to get somewhere and not have precisely what I need)

Don't fall into the trap of "they fit good right out of the box". Most all of the shoes are going to need some modification and it is that/those modification(s) that is going to get you the best fit and location for your nail holes.

And, IMNTBCHO, those Extra E-Zs can be a lot of shoe for a thin walled horse to wear, especially if they are not clipped up and fit correctly.

I kinda like the Extra-EZ's on thin walled horses myself. I fit the nailholes to the whiteline and then grind the shoe all around to blend with the hoofwall. I like the extra sole support the wider web has to offer. If the hoofs are really thin walled then I hand make a wide web shoe and punch the nails to the outside of the web and then have lots of sole support with the extra web over the sole. Have a good work day! Gary
