i have a 7 year old QH gelding that has been having probs ever scenc i got him. when i got him he had 6 inch hooves and a really bad abcess. i had them trimed and took care of the abcess then he started limping about a month ago the vet said it was an old suspensory injury. then she came back out and said that it might be his hoof b/c it grows faster than the others and it is really long and the other day the leg swelled up and then went back down the next day she also said that it could be another abcess coming up. she told me to get his hooves trimed and but a heal wedge on it and see if it stops the limping. what do you think of this situation? i really dont know what do to. his last trimming was feb 12 and its already this long.

Can't tell the shape of the hooves without seeing them. Can you get some photos and post them? Fronts, sides, soles?

Hi,
You could try uploading your photos to a free image hosting site, like www.imgup.com, and then hyperlink them to the forum. Or else, e-mail them to me (happyhooves@goldenequines.com) and I'll post them for you.
If your horse was last trimmed Feb. 12, he's definitely due for another trim. If his hooves do grow exceptionally fast, you may want to get him trimmed more regularly. Get your farrier's opinion. :)
All the best!

Did you have this horse Vet checked before you purchased him? It sounds like he has always had a problem to me and it could be a chronic problem. Can you get any history on him from the previous owner? I have seen this many times, it could be a weakness with the horses suspensorys because of poor conformation, it could be an old injury or it could be something new. Pictures of the whole horse, front, both sides and rear might help us help you figure out what it going on.

It sounds as though it is an old existing problem which may be related to imbalance as well as an old injury
There are many factors related to this issue
you may want to start out pointing this out to your Farrier with a Vet present to rule out a number of issues including high/low syndrome and imbalances
A good Farrier/Vet team can do wonders in the right situation
best of luck to you
as always
