Ok well I see my last thread got hijacked and then locked, but I wanted to give an update. Litterally the next day after creating this thread I got under some mini's, not a small feet seeing I am 6'2", and put a couple good cuts in my hands. Nothing serious just a good days blood letting. Subsequently went directly back to the gloves and have not been under a horse with out them.

The breathable surgical gloves how much and ware do you get them from? How durrable are they? Hey Baron I got an idea: maby we start threads specifically for running everyone else down. Maby those who don't like being friendly will get it all out there and let everyone else enjoy these threads.

The breathable surgical gloves how much and ware do you get them from? How durrable are they? If your talking about the nitrile/fabric gloves. I would guess that on the average I go through a pair every couple of months. I find that I will tear the fabric on the backside of one of the fingers before I wear out the nitrile covering on the palms.

Yup those were the ones.* Umm just for kicks, what is Nitrile? It's a plastic type material much like laytex, just not as flexable as laytex. Its use is primarly in surgical gloves where one maybe aleargic to laytex.

I found these they might work well what do you all think? They look too bulky to me.

I use mechanics gloves from Snap On. They fit like a second skin but I have to take them off for nailing. I have thought about cutting out the thump and 1st finger. They are pricy but they are tough.

Sounds like you need to learn how to be more careful, if your cutting your hands that easy, whats to say you won't hack up the feet?

You may have found a solution for your hands, but what about those poor little minis?:D

Thats not fare, I am 6'2" those mini's should be happy I don't have them hog-tied on there backs so I can trim them. Holding the hoof with my hands for the little ones is ware I get my battle scars. Like I said, "If I don't bleed alittle I haven't been working." Should prove I am just a little hard on my body not as bad as others I know of lol

I use Mechanix gloves in the winter, but I can't stand wearing any gloves in the summer. It is too hot and the gloves tend to slip when I'm shaping shoes, even when I tried cutting the fingers off an old pair.

My mechanix gloves tend to get a hole right beneath the thumb on the outside of my hand in a matter of days as well. I don't know if it's cuz my tiny hands only fit in the girly ones and they aren't as tough as the guy ones or what. It's frustrating. I have to patch them up before I use them to toughen that spot.

I find those gloves with Nitrile coated bottom/nylon top at Lowe's. They have a thin blue bottom and are made by Wells Lamont and have a picture of a mule on them. They run about $5.00. You can find the same quality or a little better at Wal-Mart for a dollar cheaper. They are in the t-shirt/underwear section at every WalMart I've been to. The are made by the same company (Wells Lamont) but have a dark grey nitrile coated bottom.

One should wear a glove on the left hand (if right handed) while trimming minis to protect the hand holding the squirmy little buggers foot.

The hole below the thumb comes from the edge of your rasp....If you grind off both edges (I don't use them anyway) you won't kill your gloves!

I tried gloves once, long time ago when I had a bandage on my hand from a TB who wanted to perform so well that he put his foot down before I was ready to release it and the nail sliced my hand up... nothing like a not having the feeling in your hands while working tongs or swinging a hammer.. they sure do make cool looking pictures though....

Don't get upset, I am a health and safety specialist after all.... this was only a suggestion - I have seen these gloves in action with construction workers and they are great. I see your ego is very high, i'll stick to reading your posts !!!

Just a thought: as a WOMEN, it's nicer when a man has smooth hands. You should wear gloves ! :D

JPT, that was my first anvil.. used it for 4 years... 70 lbs NC.. I ended up giving it to a friend for his kids to tink around on... and I used St. Croix xtra's... then I started using Kerkhart SSP's, then I got a 158 lb Peter Wright, and started hand making everything... That is a stationary anvil.. parked my trailer and started working out of my truck and got the certifier.. 100lb...
