I have only been at this a year now, and I am trying to decide wich way to go. My mentor uses gloves, and I have used them all winter, but now that summer is slowly coming its got me to thinking again. We use these very nice goat or lamb skin gloves. They conform nice hold up well and can take a good licken. I am leaning towards staying with them, seeing that I have a good scar, and a bit of pain, on my nuckle from a good and deep rasp cut. I am pretty sure I went darn close to the capsular ligament, if not though it. Last summer I had a saying if I wasn't bleeding a little my wife wouldn't know I went to work. Any way I guess I am weighing the extra sweat against the protection.

The day after I was picking pieces of bone out of my rasp I started wearing gloves. I wear the thin mechanics gloves and they have been great.

I don’t ware them at all until I hit the bone with something sharp and rusty; however I only keep them on till the skin graphs heal up nice. I might not be the brightest monkey out there but it works for me.

I use gloves for everything except nailing,
My bare fingers can feel the hoof wall angle
And the combo angle of the nail as I start it.

I fall into the same catagory as Bradley...gloves on to pull shoes and trim, bare hands when nailing.

Besides the rasp factor and saving your hands that way, the gloves provide a barrier against the mud which will dry your hands out very quickly and cause them to crack, bleed, etc.

I like the Mechanics type gloves.

I'm the same. I wear mechanics gloves right up until it is time to nail. I then pull the gloves since I don't have the feel wearing them. I put them back on for finishing.
I also believe strongly in wearing safety glasses ever since I had to go to the hospital with a piece of nail in my eye.
I was tired of all the little cuts in the hands

I wear gloves as well. I wear them for while nailing too but I have the ones that have no tips on the thumb, pointer and middle. It works great. I seem to want to rasp the side of my hand alot so those gloves work wonders.

I dont wear gloves unless really cold then just a thin pair of cotton roping gloves to trim....on a side note I find it easier to keep your knuckles out of the way when rasping.:D

I wear a left hand glove all the thru up until nailing. For some reason it was the one that ended up get buggered up when a horse would pull or jerk its foot.

I don't wear gloves at all during the summer, but wear them all winter long. I used to wear them only for pulling and trimming but now I even wear them for nailing and don't seem to have any problems with do so. I do usually buy the farriers gloves with the 1st two finger tips cut out. I have not been real impressed by how they hold up though. It seems to me they get tore up pretty quickly. Better them then my hands or knuckles:D

I use Nitrile-Coated Nylon Gloves. They cost about $5 are comfortable and wear well and shape to your fingers and hands. I wear them for everything including nailing. They are just like not wearing gloves at all.

You can find them at all the hardware stores and even the convenence stores carry them.

Give them a try I think You will find you like them.

Many years ago when apprenticing we drove up to do some ponies that were just being ridden in by the kids and so were very manageable, or so we thought. In less than 10 min. the guy I was working with had a slice on the back of his hand that took 10 stitches to close from one of these little darlings. From that moment on I've always worn gloves that had the fingers and thumb removed but provides protection for the back and palm of the hand. I feel naked without them now, so always use gloves as a matter of routine. The bicycle or weight lifters gloves work real nice.

Grandpa always told me "If you go without wearing gloves long enough, eventually you won't need to were gloves". So far it works for me. Knock on wood.

ohh, I have these watson gloves (I think there delta too) that are wonderful! Spandex back and thin rubber. Can use them for nailing too. Ok for winter, but put big mitten on top to keep warm anytime not really using hands. My boss has used them all winter and hasn't used gloves for 15 years. Dont use gloves in warm enough weather. I was findng the deerskin wore to easily and these keep your hands dry. Good for mud too! and to top if off, they come in pink!!

I use Nitrile-Coated Nylon Gloves.

Agreed. I use them too, they are VERY thin. Almost like a surgical glove.

I never wore gloves up until about a year and a half ago. I play guitar and the calluses were so large that I was starting have trouble forming certain chords. So I started wearing gloves. It took a lot of getting used to.

The nitrile/fabric gloves seem to be very strong and resist tearing. Its sort of like wearing a very strong breathable surgical glove.

I was in Colorado working with a respected farrier for the day. He didnt wear gloves. So later that evening we were out to dinner with him and his son (apprentice) and I told him I usually wore gloves. His reply was "You do? ... Well I usually do too." He basically said he didnt want to appear to be 'a wuss' so left the gloves off that day since he didnt know many who wore gloves. ;)

For those of you who have access to any military surplus stores, see if you can get a pair of the aviators gloves. These have a leather palm and fingers but have a body and backing of KEVLAR fabric. I carried them for years when humping a machine gun w/ multiple hot barrels (1200 rnds a minute will heat things up a bit) and when working on tracked vehicle engines. The palms and fingers will give you all the touch you need, but, prevent you from getting your fingers burned or pinched. The KEVLAR is great in that it is almost indestructible and allows your hands to breath and prevent nasty sweating and slipping (). What is even better is that the gloves are also machine washable :D.

Bryan,
Far be it from me to pile on the Panzerfuhrer here but I just couldn't resist.

Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeburg,_Illinois

His home town of Freeburg Illinois. I'm on record as saying this aint Mayberry and he aint Andy. It's worse yet-he's BARNEY!!!:D

For all his tall tales of dynamic entry raids in crack houses and such it turns out he lives in a sleepy bedroom community with no crime beyond someones dog peeing on someone else's lawn:rolleyes: I bet making sure the dog is licensed is the biggest extent of his policing:eek:

My word this stuff is priceless!:p
