Do not want to hotshoe a horse that is afraid of smoke and noise. Improper hotshoeing is not good. You have to use up fuel. Makes it a hot job during the summer, especially if your located in South. Could start a fire in the barn.

You will need a few more tools. Your shoeing time can be affected. You will have to carry water or have it available. It is a procedure that might meet with owner disapproval. You will need to maintain a charged fire extinguisher. Many shoeing rigs have burned to the ground due to propane ignition. Some jurisdictions have strict rules on propane tank transportation, which would most probably not be an issue except in the case of an accident.

most of the answers so far are comfort and safety isues for the Farriers
Disad vantages for the horse , as already stated , are one safety , the horse may be frightened by it
too long a burn =heat transfer to hoof , more a problem with the novis useing heat to fit shoes , particularly on thin soled TBs and Aussie saddle ponies and alike
the hoofters will tell you that it dries out the hoof too much , might well do if you over diong it , but I imadgine the horse would have kicked you in the gutz by then and rightfully so :)
The way I see it there arent to many disadvantages to hot shoeing a horse but that is what I think yeah:)

I always shoe hot, problems like fire risk and spooky horses can -with experience- be reduced to a minimum.
One problem will always remain, it can be a breath taking job! That's why I always use a fan, which is more fun in summer than in winter time.......

Here are a few advantages: I can seat, stretch, sweeten, and ***y up a shoe no sweat. I can clip 'em, knit 'em and fit 'em alot better with heat. I only hot fit to fit clips, but build all steel shoes hot, and shape all the aluminium that way. Why beat on something full wack, when I can bend it around with gentle hammer drops? This job is hard enough, so if I can make it alittle easier and get better results, I'll do it. I think cold bangin' is cheating, and accepting something close, but not right. I am sure people will disagree, but hot is the only way for me!
