Ok, I'm a vet student who's got a question for everyone out there. The other day we were handed a load of legs and asked forefoot or back, left or right. well they never actually told us the answers about how to tell. So I was hoping someone on here might be able to. Thanks

the fores should've been rounder than the rears which wouldv'e been oval

the chestnuts up the legs would be to the insides

best to you

as always

Another thing to look for is the medial side is usually not as wide as the lateral. Hope this helps? Gary

Forefeet are generally rounder, hind feet more triangular. Lateral side of all feet are a litle bit fuller(wider)if you drew a line straight down the center of the frog., unless the horse had a conformational deformity that forced him to be pigeon toed in front or or tipped inward on his hind feet,in which case the more full side may be the medial, rare though. )
If you are looking at bare coffin bones, the same shapes and assymetry apply. The lateral sides of the bone are generally wider. (left fore wider on left side, right fore wider on right side..get it? If you have the limb cut off high enough to include the chestnuts, they are on the medial side of the limb.Another quick trick if looking at a whole front limb is the accessory carpal bone is on the lateral side of the knee.
