On July 14, Delmarva Farriers Assn held an informal hammer-in in Delaware.
It was a lot of fun with a real good bunch of guys. Those of you who often come on these boards who showed up it was a pleasure to meet you.
Also, I dont think enough can be said about Tom Bloomer. The standard of excellence that Tom sets for things he involves himself in is without equal.
Good going and thanks Tom.
Any of you guys that live within driving distance of this group I'd recommend you give them your consideration. They have a lot to offer.

Meant to be there, but had to be "on call" for a show close to home. How did you like Abners shop? That's a good place.... Food is always good too :D

Food is always good too :DI only dissected one of the two foundered pony leg cadavers I brought to the clinic. The other one was up for grabs, but everybody decided to order lunch from the sandwich shop instead. :p
Geroge and Linda did a really HOT clinic on swaging racing plates. Next time we need to setup George's rig in the shade. (Linda is George's IJHU sister - only woman alive to ever pass the IJHU exam :) )
Looking forward to the Lee Green clinic on September 15, 2007.

Absolutely, great shop and food. A place to plug in would have been nice though :) but other than that was fine. Hope to see you at one that you can get too.

Just want to Thank every one there at the hammer-in, and to Abner having us over there. Tom Bloomer was great, and very helpful with some of my questions and everyone was happy. Got to get into the fire again, and Tom helped me, showing different ways of doing things. Got to swage out to in front of Tom and the others.
Ps. got great deal on some bar shoes and a hammer, too.
Can't wait to go see to Lee Green in Sept 15th. Saw him at Amsterdam Farrier Supply in New Holland, last fall. That was a good day too!!
Can't wait to join the Guild here very soon.
Sorry it took so long to say Thanks, but I couldn't find this blog.
........See you soon, Linda...................
Be swaging soon! and playing in the forge too!
AND
Thanks Tom Bloomer for the great compliment to George and I! I am very deeply grateful..........Linda

Tom Bloomer was great, and very helpful with some of my questions.Must be a reference to the selenium poisioning. Remember that was a SWAG (Scientific Wild A ss Guess) not a diagnosis.
You ought to post the whole story about the bleeding hooves on a new thread and let some of the others take a SWAG at it. It would be a good discussion and we might all learn something - especially with the likes of Dr. Rooney and Dr. O'Grady lurking.
There's been enough trash talking round here for a while. Go make a new thread on the bleeding hoof story. :D

High end clients expect a high level of service response and availibility. The number one complaint horse owners have about farriers has to do with AVAILIBILITY - not returning calls, not showing up on time, not replacing lost shoes.
It appears that this issue is common knowledge in the industry, yet AVAILABILITY seems to be a business strategy that most farriers do not understand.

Tom,
Know what you're saying there and wont dispute that.
Point I think Jaminkind was making was that more than a few of us out here tend to place a high value on keeping our word-especially to a friend.
Glad you're such an understanding fellow:)

Yes I am very understanding because I actually UNDERSTAND. I've been in the "service" industry my whole life. When you charge a high fee for premium service, your clients tend to demand premium value. When faced with the choice of loyalty to a friend and loyalty to my livelyhood and my reputation with my clients I'm going to follow the long term strategy that favors my bank account.
There is also a cost involved with being a premium service provider. When you step into that realm, you give up some freedom. You're no longer free to blow off your clients in order to hang out with your buddies.
OTOH, Jaye offered to pay travel and lodging expenses for anyone that went to the Guild clinic to come to Atlanta for a seminar . . . Being a premium service provider means he can afford to do that. Unfortunately that offer is only good for those who attended the clinic.

Hang out with buddies? If thats all that was happening then ok. I was under the impression that the man was hired to do a job.
I could say a lot more but with Baron lurking with his lip chain I'll just stop here and once again we will agree to disagree on this one.

Do I see a double standard here? I quess family and buisness is not a good enough excuse for anyone else?
Tom, I hope you also provide a premium service to your clients, I do.

There is no double satndard for you Phil- you have been invited down and a couple weeks ago, on a Saturday morning via the phone you said "I need to come down". I said "Come On, I won't beat ya up I'll put ya to work":)

Correction my friend. I did not say "I need to". I would like to, big difference. I am glad that you will let me. Thank you. I am on three beers already and feeling a bit fiesty. Been a good week. :D
I am glad you won't beat me up. My body can't take the abuse anymore. Could hurt myself just trying to run away.

Kind of disapointing that Baron is soooooo strict. Got rid of a lot of tension when we could just go at it. I don't care if the world wide webbers are watching. Notice this site did not get hacked into until it got all nice and mushy. We probably scared them before.

Me too. ""Feeling a little bloody"". Bloomer is a good hand, he has seen a small portion of what I do, others have seen it also. My commitment to my customer is/are foremost!
The offer i gave to those that attended that clinic still stands and will stand. I know one thing about myself- I am an SOB but I am a fair SOB.
As of now and tentative- Andrew Grimm, Brian Purrington, Jason Maki and a couple who were not there( Mike bailey) are scheduled or scheduling visits. The best thing about my offers you don't have to be a member of any union to participate:cool:

I was under the impression that the man was hired to do a job.
Jay was planning to fund his own travel and lodging. I did not hire him. From the clinic fees we covered lodging and airfare for Rick Burten, but I didn't "hire" him either. It still cost Rick quite a bit to be at this event - at least a two days income.
Direct expenses for this clinic were over $1500. We collected about $1200 in clinic fees. In addition horses off my books were provided for the shoeing exam and the clinic. Figure another $700 of lost income there.
BUT, we made up the lost income with a catering gig we picked up two weeks later as a result of the food we served at the clinic. :)
In addition to the clinic fee, most people that attended this event had to dip into their own pocket to cover travel and lodging. Most attendees gave up one or two days of shoeing income as well.
