The horses were trimmed on Saturday.
Anywho its 3 days later and all of the horses are still sore.
I've read here about a tar or something that you brush on that helps the bottom of the hoof toughen up.
Can someone tell me what that is and where you might find it.
Also, will it help the two with shoes.
Also, what about a mud soak. Does soaking horses in mud help pull soreness. I seem to remember this when I was a kid.
Thanks for your help!

If I have a horse that may be sore I mix some Keretex hardener and some sole freeze. I soak it into some carpet felt and elasticon it to the bottom of the foot until it (the pack :D ) falls off.

Thanks edecker. I'm not sure what either product is so I will look them up.

your horses shouldn´t be sore after trimming.
Yep! I know that.

The tar you're looking for is pine tar, read ingredient label. My farrier for 20 years until I moved used brown sugar and betadine mixed to toughen up feet. Karen

Brown sugar and betadine? Never heard of that one. Maybe I'll give it a try. Did he just brush it on or did he wrap it too?

If indeed your farrier is at fault, I hope you are looking for a new one. ;)

Yes, I do... but I didn't this time. I got lazy.

Hey Nicci have they ever been sore after a trim before? Just wondering if something else is going on. This time of the year, new hay, green grass makes me wonder if it is laminitis. Just a thought.

Just read this. Do you think they were trimmed short?

If what Phil said turns out not to be the case and the animal is sore from too much sole being pared out the best thing for that is Venice Turpentine.
It can be found in your favorite tack shop right on the shelf usually next to the pine tar.

Thanks Phil and George. The two with barefeet are feeling a little better now. They trotted out this morning.
The one with front shoes picked his way out this morning.
Not sore before the trim/shoeing.
I think they were trimmed too short.
I'm going to look for the stuff at the tack shop.
Thanks a bunch!

oh the other one with shoes is feeling good too. He wasn't as sore as the other three. He's tough guy... a few days and he was readtogo!

Nikki,
also get yourself a little container with a paintbrush type cap. Use that to apply the stuff. Reason being it's extremely messy and kinda hard to get it off yourself which you inevitably will do if not being careful.
Good luck to you
George
