View Full Version : Strange growth on the frog

Back in October, my 6yr old gelding stepped on a nail. The nail went in at an angle through the frog. Fortunately, after many x-rays it was determined that he did NOT do any damage to the synovial structure. He was put on oral antibiotics and topical (that I had to inject into the nail hole). His hoof was kept wrapped and cleaned daily. An abscess developed quickly and ended up blowing out the back of his hoof. Eventually, the frog completely fell off.

The frog has been growing back (slowly it seems) but along with that is where I'm concerned. I'll describe it the best I can. In the same side of the frog where the nail went in, there is a big lump of tissue. It's very soft and "gushy" and tissue where it shouldn't be. It's slightly painful to the touch and he's walking tippy toe here and there.

Any idea what the growth of tissue is? How should I be treating it now?

Thanks! :)

Sounds like another abscess has formed. Could have gotten some dirt, mud, bacteria into the wound or small cut and gotten reinfected. If it is spongy to the touch and the horse flinches when touched then it needs to be opened up to relieve the pressure.

is it possible for you to post pictures, it could be alot of things from prolapsed sensitve tissue, to another condition called canker. Thanks Mo

Unfortunately, I don't have a way to post a picture.

The good news is that over the past few days the growth seems to be shrinking and drying up a little.

I did some research on the internet for canker and from the pictures I came up with it's not that, thank goodness.

What is prolapse sensitive tissue? And if it's that, should I continue to treat it the way I've been?

I should mention that we were hit with lots and lots of rain a few weeks ago and now that things are drying out he seems to be doing better.

Thanks!

prolapsed tissue is basically the internal sensitive tissue that pops out through the insensitive or calloused stuff. (usually through the whole that the nail created or in some cases where an abcess has been to aggresively cut out. Be Safe Mo oh and as far as treatment i dont know what you are doing with it but keep it dry and clean, i have used dry ice and/or formalin to get prolapsed tissue to draw back up.but thats typically with sensitive quarter cracks.
