I have been shoeing horses for about 6 years for my self and about a dozen freinds. I went to a school in NC and got Certified. Now I am shoe full time for the public and i was wondering do any of you carry liability insurance and is it avalible? What type of protection do we have from some of the court crazy people.Hoping I will never need it.

Yes insurance is a very good thing in this day & time. If you are a member of the AFA then you have 50,000 worth of disability insurance already but that want mean anything if a customer wants to sue you. You need General Liability and CCC (Care, Custody, Control). Markel Insurance Company has a very good policy set up just for farriers. They also do horse boarding/breeding/show/sales/hayrides and etc. They have 3 to choose from depending on the amount of coverage that you want. You can call them and they will explain it to you. I checked on it last year and really like to deal w/ them. Good luck and in my opinion money well spent just in case.
www.horseinsurance.com (go to Applications and click farrier and check out the policy for yourself before you call).

I get an insurance package that is very similar to the Markel package (a little higher total liability) from my State Farm agent. They have what they call a "home bases business" policy that works with your homeowners insurance. I have house, car, and business insurance with them and that helps the cost. I found it to be less expensive (there is no such thing as cheap in insurance) than Markel ( I have a 20+ year clean record which also helps the cost), and I have a local agent for questions.
