Ok this is a basic question, what causes sand cracks and how can they be prevented. I have a client who has 4 horses and one keeps cracks on in the center of its hooves. The horse is a 4 year ol QH mare. I know how to correct or fix them, Im just trying to get to the root of the problem so to say. The other 3 horses never have a one. Just curious. Thanks

Usually bringing the toe back, bringing the heels down to about 1/8" from the live sole at the seat of corn, leveling the walls to the same level as the sole callous so they share weight with the callous and doing a good mustang roll all the way around will help eradicate sand cracks. Also, making sure the sole callous is level and smooth with no bumps to cause pressure points in the walls.
