While having some windshield time the other day, I began thinking about the turbulent events of last year as well as the never ending turmoil of the AFA which has been going on as long as I can remember and something occured to me.

The organization has all of its power and policy implementing in the hands of the BOD. The BOD is composed of all the presidents of all the state associations.

Now, being as that one does not need to hold an AFA card to be a member of most of these state associations, does the AFA still grant a seat on the BOD to someone who is not a member?

If this is so it is something that should be looked at as Im sure you'll all agree it is ludicrous to have policy decisions being steered by non-members if this is the case.

Any of you guys know more about this?

George

Hey George,

I'm not currently a member of the AFA BoD, but I think I can answer...

The BOD is composed of all the presidents of all the state associations.
Just as a point of information, some associations have a designated position for their BoD rep., which is separate and distinct from the association Prez, so it depends on the charter/bylaws of the association whether or not the Prez is automatically the BoD rep.

...does the AFA still grant a seat on the BOD to someone who is not a member?
No. All BoD members must be current members of the AFA. Unfortunately, if the designated BoD representative chooses to let his/her membership lapse, an association has no representation until the representative renews his/her membership or until the association formally notifies the AFA that a new representative has been designated.

In fact, that's the case with my state association right now; our President has let his AFA membership lapse, and we currently have no representation on the BoD. I believe the AFA still sends him BoD information and extends him the courtesy of notification on issues, but he cannot vote, as he is not a paid member. Subsequently, we had no vote on the latest BoD issue: selecting a new BoD delegate to serve on the Executive Committee.

George,

Article VI(Board of Directors), Section 7 of the AFA Bylaws states:

"Only Regular, Lifetime, and Chapter Members in good standing(my emphasis) are entitled to vote.

Just wanted to provide the substantiation for Danvers information.

Rick
