Just curious....

My vet diagnosed by daughters pleasure mare with negative digital palmer angles in both her front feet. I am curious as to whether anyone can tell me if this was something my farrier should've caught...or if it could've only been diagnosed with x-rays. I have received conflicting information from two different vets.

Thanks!!!

Depends on his experience Ma'am. Did you pay him for a very experienced shoer?

Also depends on what is visible upon examination of the hoof capsule.

Mr. Aalders:

WoW!!! Does that "Ma'am" make me feel old!!! :D

Anyway, I guess I should've given more information on my first post....

Yes, the farrier in question is an experienced shoer of which his prices are in the mid-high to high range for our area. He does in fact shoe for several of the large show barns in the vicinity. I guess I am just concerned that he should've caught this since he has shoed this particular mare for 7 to 8 years now. I am not trying to place blame or anything....I am looking more to know whether or not I should continue using him or if I should go with another farrier that was recommended to me.

To add further questions...

My mare has extremely slow growing feet. We just got done today doing her first Shock Wave Therapy treatment for her sesmoids which the vet indicated was most likely brought on by her foot problem. The vet of course is recommending she have wedges put up front, but indicates that he does not feel a need to "rush" doing it until her toe grows out a little bit. We are done showing for the year, so we aren't putting any stress on her at this time. Since her feet are so slow in growing, I am wondering whether waiting 4 weeks or so would really make a difference in her growth, or if I should just get the shoes put on now to aleviate some of the pain she is feeling? Do you have any suggestions on what supplement would be the best in getting her feet to grow? Sorry so many questions!

Thanks much!!!!!!

Pics of both the feet and the xrays would help in get you better answers, Can not draw ideas on what what you can not see when there is so many variables.Like Rick said it depends.

Well you could post some decent pics. And see if anyone here can tell its a zero degree palmar angle or not.

Somewhere on this board is a 'How-to' make pictures we can use for information we need here.
