I have a mare with layed over bars, and I have been trimming them back to the level of the sole. However, they still appear layed over as if I could stick a knife under the remaining bar and lift it up. I can see a thin line of dirt in this area. However, I don't want to go lower than the sole, and I do see some bruising in the area which makes me nervous that I might be too far down already. Any suggestions? This horse has flat front feet but is sound - I don't want to pull a Stausser on her an trim below the level of the sole, as I think the bars are there to help support the p3. I dont have any pictures, sorry.

If your just trimming the horse I would reccomend trimming the bars flush to the sole eliminating any dirt traps. Question? Are you trimming the frog at all and creating a nice little V in the commisure?

The first picture is an old picture of the issue (from two months ago.) On the left side you can see the bruising. On the right bar you can see the over laid area. I didn't feel comfortable going any deeper. No - I didn't trim the frog, as I didn't feel it needed it. Looking at this older picture, I think I could go a bit deeper, but the other problem is the bar just keeps growing out layed over.

This foot dosen't look bad. The toe could be a bit back as well as the heels, this would give better suport and less presure on the bars, that don't realy look too bad. The lareral side is a bit too lond too.
As to the brusing, you have a small hoof on a good sized Paint that have notoriously thin soles as a breed, so they may tend to bruse and be sore.
You could try to condition the feet over a few months and try not to use the horse much as the added weight on already small feet wouldn't be great.
Another option could be to give suport to the heels while moving the breakover back and protecting the foot with a set of wide web shoes. Should be done in about an hour.

Any part of the bar that you can hook your knife under, you can pare off. It won't be going deeper than the sole, it will only be removing folded over flaps.
