Hi,

my 5 year old QH gelding has a single "fever ring" on both front feet about 1/3 the way down the walls, there is no dishing of the horns. I moved him to a new barn in August and he was put into heavy work at that time. He never showed any signs of founder or severe lameness during this change over. In early November he began having some stiffness at the canter, which I told my farrier about during his last visit (November 16). My farrier pulled his shoes and found that my horse had two faint red crescent shaped bruises on his soles at the point of his toes. He told me that the fever ring and the bruises showed that my horse had probably been put into heavy work to quickly, but he did not indicate that my horse had foundered.

I have lightened my horse's work load considerably and his gait at the canter is improving, but he's not 100%. He trots fine, but not as elevated as he is when he's 100%.

Am I looking at a case of bruised soles or something worse?

Concussion can cause this as from to heavy work also a new farrier changing angles especially with bruising in the toe without founder/laminitis
Is this a new farrier as well with the change of location?
as ever

Thanks for your reply. Due to my farrier being on vacation, we had to use a different farrier when I moved him in August (I didn't think that he did a bad job, but he might have taken a bit more off his foot than I would have liked), but then was able to get my old farrier back to do him in late September and then again in November, so there was one time where he was done by a different guy. I will be sticking with my farrier from now on as best as I can.
