hi,
i have a 7 year old quarter horse gelding that has developed sidebone. He is a great heading horse, and the sidebone never bothered him before. But 3 weeks ago we were warming up in the arena, and he struck the calcium buildup on his right front. We took him to our vet and had x-rays done and he confirmed that he had sidebone and that he hit it, and fractured it. He is still a little bit sore, and i was wondering if there is any shoeing practices that can take the stress off that leg.
thank you :)

A full roller motion shoe,(rolled in toe and sides, similar as for ringbone, applied to a foot that has been balaned perfectly usually helps.
Also if the arenas are hard, either aluminum shoe or a pad under a steel shoe to help reduce concussion.

What Patty said will certainly work as far as taking some of the stress off the affected area; however, depending on the extent of the pathology and severity of the fracture, some veterinarians recommend removal of the fractured piece, especially when it's likely to be whacked again.

You might want to discuss the surgical option with your vet because surgery might involve less downtime and/or likelihood of reinjury.
