I need some suggestions on how best to proceed with this case:

History:

overweight QH mare, bred last spring. Had been shod in front with quarter clips. I picked the client up about July last summer, the owner didnt like the way the previous farrier treated her horses, and was having concerns over the way they were being shod, which was very flat, long toe, no heel. When i picked the client up i asked why the horses had quarter clips, she said she had no idea, and those were the shoes that the farrier put on them.

I started working on the horses, after i did the first reset, the owner told me that the mare was no longer forging, which she had done since the other farrier had been working on her. The TB gelding she had also stopped forging.

Horses were reset every six weeks, when the quarter clipped shoes wore out i switched them both to regular St. Croix lites, both horses were sound, both seemed to be getting more heel, they werent so long in the toe between resets either.

Getting close to the end of the mares last trimester the owner wanted the shoes pulled upon recommendation of the vet. I pulled the shoes.

six weeks later i go back for a trim, mare still has not foaled out at this point, is considerably uncomfortable to stand for the trim, owner says the mare has NOT been sore barefoot though, i assume the discomfort is due to the fact that she is heavy with foal. Heels on the mare at this point were quite ****py, considering they were starting to look good while shod.

Mare foals out 3 days after trim, digital pulse present, she is very sore. Vet comes out, says possible laminitis, bute her, a week later mare is still sore, vet comes out does Xrays, calls me. SLIGHT rotation in the left front, says he would like to see ANY or ALL of the following on the mare: eggbar or regular bar, wedge pad, shoe set back, squared, rolled toe.

all that makes sense to me for founder, but I am a bit concerned about the heel issue that the mare has, during my apprenticeship, my mentor had a few LTLH cases, and he told me that alot of people like to put bar shoes on the low heels in an attempt to give support, but he said he didnt like to do it, and preferred to use a wide web rim with plenty of support at the heels.

SOOOO i am wondering if the best course of action for this mare would be a regular wide web shoe, with either a full wedge pad or a rim wedge pad, the wedge and wide web to ease the pain from the laminitis, and a regular shoe so as not to exacerbate the low heel issue.

thoughts on this????

Here are two photos of a system I have used quite often in scenarios similar to what you describe. It involves a Natural Balance aluminum shoe with wedge pad and dental impression material. The breakover of these shoes is exactly under the apex of P-3 and the shoe/pad is positioned for caudal support. Prior to application the capsule was derotated to align P-3 with the sole, meaning the trim started near the apex of the frog and continued rearward to the widest point of the frog, and in one case even further. Your particular case might require more elevation, in which case the EDSS rail system would be another approach, which is the picture showing the removable frog insert.
Good luck on your case.

Went and shod the mare today, she walked up quite tender, a bit rocked back on the heels but not as bad as i thought. Put the wide shoes on, set back from the really rolled toe and put the bar wedge rim pads on. Almost instant relief for the mare when i put the second foot back on the ground, she gave a HUGE snort and a sigh, and i tell ya, when she walked away sounder than when she walked up that just made my day!!! Made last monday disappear and seem like just a bad dream, days like today just confirm WHY i like doing this!!!!
