I have a 5yr qtr horse gelding that has had a problem for over a year now.
His hoof wall (both front feet, one worse than the other) has a crack right down the center of the hoof. The wall seems to dip in the middle, like a valley going down the center of the wall, from the cornet band down to the toe. The crack runs in this valley. The bad foot has open crack (about an 1/8" wide) and 1/2" up the wall. We have put tried shoeing with toe clips to keep the crack from spreading. There has been 2 resettings since we started with this method. Can't tell if this is helping or not. Would there be an underlying problem beneath the hoof wall, that should be addressed? I was expecting the crack to grow out by now, but, you can still see a hairline crack from the cornet band down and the dip or valley still seems to be there as well. His good foot seems better. Any suggestions as to treatment?
