Hi There,

Yesterday my TB gelding, Jake, showed up with a 5 cm long, 2cm wide cut on his hoof (definitely hoof, not skin) that follows along the coronet band on the lateral side of his near fore. He had ripped the hoof surface off from front to back (not sure how he did this!) and is not lame, just sore to touch the area. Didn't bleed much and not very deep, just taken the top layer of hoof off. Cleaned, dried and bandaged and vet is advising to keep doing the same for next week or so and see how it heals.

Any suggestions on how to help the healing and what to do once this problem area starts being pushed down the hoof towards the sole?

I will post a picture tomorrow after I take a snapshot when changing bandage.

Thanks!

Louise and Jake in Australia.

Please, does anyone have ideas on helping the healing?

Louise, i see it happened about a month ago, not likely a medical soft tissue matter now. You have probably quit dressing it and noticed the wall avulsion has hardened and started to migrate toward the ground. If all went well it can be prepped and filled with adhesive, sometime soon or within a couple months maybe a good time to do this. As it is being pushed by new wall growth it will descend more forward than presently, without a patch the closer it gets to the ground the more prone it is to breakoff and or interefere with a good nailing pattern. When all is said and done scarring may remain around the coronary but these horizontal injuries usually heal quite nicely.
