View Full Version : Possible Abscess...??

My TB came up mildly lame on the LF around a week ago. In checking his foot and leg I found what looks like a scab on his LF inside (medial?) heel.

My first thought was overreach injury; I cleaned the area, washed with Betadine - it looked like an abrasion or small sore, and the following day it was crusted/scabbed over again. I don't see any drainage visibly but it could be there just very slow.

My regular vet is out of town till next week but I had my farrier examine the horse's heel and foot, remove the shoe, test with hoof testers, etc. He did not think the horse felt sore but said there could always possibly be something deeper inside the foot.

I have noticed some transient mild heat on the foot. He is walking fine, looks sound on longe line but was noticeably worse after bucking and playing one day on the longe. A couple days rest after that and he was still mildly lame under saddle after a few minutes of trot.

I am resting him now and have scheduled the vet but does this sound like it could possibly signify an infection in the foot somewhere? The only kind of abscess I have seen is the 3-legged- lame kind. Should I soak his foot? Is there anything else I could be doing? Thanks for any opinions.
