When I got the paper in the mail about the NC Tool Clinic with Dr. Doug Butler I knew I had to go. What an awesome clinic it was. Dr. Butler gave a great presentation; just what a new farrier such as myself needed to hear. Wish I had taken a video camera to record it. I finally broke down and purchased his Principle of Horseshoeing P3 book. Had the honor of having him sign it as well. If Dr. Butler comes to a clinic in your area, do your best to go see and meet him.

We went to that one, but we left when they started the part on how to handle unruly horses, thought that part was for the horse owners. It was ok.

I was there too.........
I have a lot of respect for Doug Butler and what he has done for the farrier business in general. However it was dissapointing to drive all that way to watch a farrier with his qualifications cold shoe a horse

Were you wanting to watch a forging clinic or a shoeing clinic?

I think a well balanced clinic should include both..........this particular clinic appeared to have a lot of young, inexperienced folks there and I think to bang out a shoe job cold sends the wrong message to them (or at the very least only shows the minimum as to what will get the job done)

I don't know how the clinic was advertised, but in pragmatic terms, I think many young, inexperienced folks would probably benefit more from a refresher course in basic trimming, fitting, shaping, nailing and finishing than from working in the forge. Perhaps, Dr. Butler read his audience and determined they'd benefit most from basics.
YMMV. :)

What do you mean by BS? I attended one of his clinics few years ago and he spent about 5 minutes running down the 4 point trim. No secret he is not a fan of Natural Balance. Is Doug closed minded, maybe he is left brained. :)

What do you mean by BS?
This ain't rocket science. BS means exactly what we all take it to mean, a direct referral to male bovine excrement.
I attended one of his clinics few years ago and he spent about 5 minutes running down the 4 point trim.
He spends considerably more time denigrating the NB protocols.
No secret he is not a fan of Natural Balance.
In this instance, you are a master of the understatement.
Is Doug closed minded,
Yes, to the nth degree. Not exactly the example one would expect from someone who is alleged to be a leading luminary in the profession. Perhaps he's been reading his own press releases too often.
maybe he is left brained. :)
Or brain dead? :o

Not quite. If memory serves, his degree is in equine nutrition or something.

I know the Doc thinks NB is BS, I was makeing sure the youth on these boards don't assume you think it is BS. Perceptions!!!!
Doc. Butler is just another horseshoer trying to make a liveing. I also got a book signed when I first met him. I was a bit turned off to hear him degrade ideas from others thinking out of the box. It is popular to knock new things. Maybe he is running for a popularity contest, so he can be popular and make more money. Us blunt people die poor.

DianneNo, he doesn't. Though he taught horseshoeing at several colleges while earning his degree, his Phd is in anatomy. The subject of the theses for that degree was equine nutrition and how it affects hoof growth and quality. Patty

Well, thanks for that.
Anyone with more than one operant sliver of grey matter, who has taken the time to read any of my thoughts on the subjest of Gene
Ovnicek, NBS, EDSS, etc, should well know that I routinely and regularly employ both the trimming protocol and the shoeing(including the shoes) protocol. They are not the only weapons in my arsenal, but do comprise a significant portion thereof.
Anyone who, by now , has not figured out my position, needs remedial reading help and a short course in applied cognative processing.
