Does snow naturally make frogs very soft? One of our horses has frogs so soft that the hoof pick can poke right into the frog. These feet don't have any smell or thrush but they do look "whiter" inside. That could be "yeast" but as I said, they don't smell. He does have free turn out 27/7 so he's getting a lot of movement. I really don't know why they are so soft. It seems like they don't have any callouses.

FourHooves, Pictures would help pin down an answer. It could be as simple as a seasonal sluffing off of excess frog. If the white, chalky stratum is parallel to the foot, and can be pulled off in an even layer, that is nothing to worry about. Irregular or deep invasive pockets might be another issue that your farrier might need to address.

They don't really have any crevices...It just seems like the frog itself is too soft. These frogs are coming back from having crevices and I wonder if the new frog material didn't have enough time to callous? The snow thing is actually a joke because our other horse who is on snow has pretty tough frogs.
