Just thought I would let you know that my mare has had two abcess' in each front feet burst tonight. During the week her lameness has deteriorated so that she hardly moved , her legs started to get a bit of filling, & her heels were starting to contract.. I relented and put her on bute so as to get her moving again before more damage happened. We have also had bugger all rain this week and that plus the oil dressing treatment has helped dry out her feet but obviously not soon enough. So she is now wrapped up with some oversize old macs to help protect her bandages. Fingers crossed I can now get her through this next hurdle. Regards Marg.

Hi all,

I don't believe that oil dressings do anything at all. My horses spend the summer in irrigated pasture and it used to be that 2 weeks after shoeing the clinchs were sticking straight out. About 8 years ago I started spraying their feet weekly with clear hardware store laquer (paint) and since then I pretty much have to rasp the clinches because most often I can't cut them with a clinch cutter.

Do you have any close up pictures of the feet? And a pcture of the whole horse? I am concerned you might be dealing with laminitis/founder and the abscesses may be from that ,not just from the wet.
AS well, oil dressings do nothing more than soften and weaken the outwer layer of the feet and rot the surface. Use a good hoof sealer instead.
