I am interested in purchasing a horse that has what the owner called split hoof. Is this a condition that can be fixed, cured? Is this an ongoing ailment? The animal is beautiful and I am not above paying for something that can be mended or cured, but I want this horse for riding purposes ( pleasure ) . He is a 4 year old gelding. What is the average cost for the treatment for this and what is the best way to go about it?

It's a good question. I am no farrier, but I'm curious to see what the pros think of this.
I suspect it would depend on the severity of the problem and the overall hoof thickness/growth/health. I don't suppose you can post photos of his feet here? Is he wearing shoes now? What treatments, if any, has the owner tried so far?

As a farrier it would not scare me if my wife came home with the foot you describe as long as what it was atached to was right. In the hands of a compentant farrier these cracks can be delt with. Keep in mind some cracks can be cronic and may never go away if detail is paid attention to.
