How often should hoof dressing be applied? I am told different things by different people, is applying it daily too frequent? I use Corona or Hooflex, alternate between the two and apply one or the other daily. My horse generally has pretty good hooves, shod in front only, altho lately he has been getting some chunks breaking off on all 4 feet.undefined I started him on Gen-a-Horse Biotin in hopes that it would help. Could I be applying the dressing too often? What kinds are the best? Thanks in advance for any info.

Hoof dressing is an aid to help maintain the natural moisture level of the hoof. To prevent the drying out and cracking in hot dry weather. But can also make the hooves very soft and mushy and brittle if you continue use when the weather is wet. Hoof dressing is only an additive to soften the hoof to keep it close to natural when the weather is too dry. In my opinion I would'nt use it everyday. Only when the weather and hooves dictate it.

In nearly a half century of shoeing, I've only had a few clients consiencious enough to apply hoof dressings every day. All developed weak crumbly hoof quality in their horses. All horses regained quality with application no more than once or twice a week.

The only dressings I ever recommend now are the varnish-types that seal the outer hoof. I recommend them in very arid climates or very wet. This is to keep the internal moisture in or the excess wet out.
Tuff stuff, keratex, tuffenup etc, or even show hoof polish is all they may ever need to seal the hoofwall. Oils and 'moisturizers' just rot the wall or weaken it if you use them a lot. Patty
