Would an OTC fungal cream be effective as a treatment if used in the same manner that Roy posted for thrush treatments? I'm thinking either a foot fungus cream or yeast infection cream applied in the frog and packed with gauze?

Just curious...

I don't know, I've often wondered, but never tried it. Mainly because I've met with success using Hydrogen Peroxide flushes. I'm intrigued by that "dermatophyte" commercial on TV for "lamisil" , their description sounds a lot like hoof infections. But I haven't done any research into the drug or its efficacy or cautionary statements. I do believe it cautions against use in people with known liver problems.

That's the thing about using human drugs for equines. Before using you need to research exactly which species the drug is recommended for or against. Probably to determine the most effective treatment, it would be best to get a culture done on the actual infection of the hoof. While culturing may prove a tad pricey at the onset; you'll likely get rid of the infection fastest if you know the best treatment.

Considering there are something like 50+ organisms that infect and devour various parts of the horse's hoof. A culture may save bucks and time in the long run!

There is a product called WHITE LIGHTNING that treats all fungal infections. It treats both infections on the foot as well as infection that form on there skin such as rain rot. The stuff is completely 100% safe, my sister uses it to clear the zits from her face. It is increadibly affective, spoken from personal experiences with it for rain rot. It comes in both a liquid form, which works very well for thrush and whiteline disease, as well as a gel form for skin fungal infections. GREAT STUFF!!! ;)
