I need opinions please.

My 5 1/2 mo Oldenburg filly is displaying a suspicious foot in her left fore. I'm not sure if it's a positive club. It's seem to show mildly at 3 months...we rasped, all was well.
3 1/2 weeks ago. I had her trimmed for the first time. Farrier said she grows more heel on left fore. She also grazes w/that foot *back*. She is living on turnout 24/7 in LARGE 8 acre field. Gets a handful of pelleted feed 2x/day, free access to grass hay and whatever green grass is left. Dry summer here in Pa.
She has VERY long pasterns like her mom. I'm really not sure mom has any club feet. Mom also has VERY long pasterns (dropped) appearing to *knuckle* at coronet band on all 4 feet....
I will post what I can of mare and foal in early spring to give idea of mom's angles.
Having *specialist* farrier out on Monday to confirm. My suspicion is a Grade1-2.

I can't tell much from the pix, because I can't tell if the soft footing is obscuring the toe of her hoof, or if it really is that dubbed off. The right front looks short and stubby in one of the pix too, so it's hard to say.

Can you get some close ups of the leg and hooves with her standing on harder ground (a mat or plywood)?

The mare looks a bit down in her pasterns in one pic, but then looks really good in another.

I have a whole series of pix of my yearling's saga with a club foot up at: http://duende.dhs.org/kris/StingsClubFootComparisons.html His wasn't bad, and I couldn't really tell for sure until I looked at the bottom and compared the shape of the bars. The clubby one was much narrower.

Thanks for the reply. I've been wondering since the lack of a response was a bad photo or what.
I will get some shots of her feet on concrete this weekend.
It's a curious thing. She looks clubby at times, then not.
Yes, her mom has steep pasterns that look clubby...but on all 4?
I will get pictures of moms feet also since she was due for a trim today....very odd.
Mom is half Dutch WB. I've see similar type feet in this breed. She is 6 coming 7, and has never taken a lame step. Lots of jumping, etc.

I didn't think the mare's pasterns looked steep. When she weights them it looks as if they might flex quite a bit, which might make the hoof look steeper, but they actually looked very good to me.

There are a couple of markers for identifying club feet. One is that when you look at the bottom the bars will be much straighter and narrower on the clubby one than on the other foot (if the other foot isn't clubbed).

Another place to look is just above the coronary band. I think it's at the joint where p2 and p3 meet (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but p2 kind of bulges out there so there's no dip above the coronary band. Instead the front of the pastern ties into the top of the hoof in a straight line.

She looks fine to me.

Farrier that specializes in corrective shoeing was out today to check her out.
No time for pictures...sorry.

He felt she was a very mild case on left fore. Grade 1. Not bad at all.
THe right looks great and correct, however the pictures I posted were of her on a hillside and distorting the appearance. She does look different on the pavement.
He took more off her heel and will be back in 3 weeks.
He suggested we take her off pasture and keep her in a stall for the next 3 weeks. That way we can monitor her true foot growth without grazing with that foot back, and eating *up* and not off the ground.

I think what we will do is give her some limited turnout time.....time to burn off and run utilizing the foot properly. Maybe 2 hrs/day. She's only 6 mo's old.

Nonetheless.....we will watch her closely and watch how the foot is growing and change directions if need be.
He also suggested that sometimes in rapid growth stages....the foot looks out of whack during a spurt as it has to catch up to the changes.
Makes sense.
