I have a 4 1/2 year old gelding with an angular deviation (toe out) in the right front leg and an accompanying club foot. Last summer (one year ago) he became ouchy on the foot and I had him x-rayed. Luckily, his coffin bone was not as upright as you might have guessed from the foot angle and he also had a slight bruising in the foot (the ground gets quite hard in late summer). This year he has gone lame again, and even now that the ground is wet again, he is still off. When the vet comes back from vacation, I will have him out for blocking, x-raying, etc. He mentioned when I talked to him about having the check ligament surgery done and I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks to having it done on an older horse? If not, it is hard to imagine not doing it. . . He is quite large (17.2) and has very good, healthy feet otherwise. When this is resolved, he will be started under saddle. This is assuming, of course, that he blocks out in the foot.
