I posted in trimming/shoeing problems since I thought my horse was either abcessing or had hot nail(s) but it looks like he may have foundered. He's a 4 year old OTTb who's been here not quite a month and came off the track being fed 24lbs of Purina Race Ready a day and no hay. I changed his diet to low sugar/carb and high fiber, lots of hay, along with probiotics, vits and amino acids. His feet were incredibly long and he has ridges and a dish. He was relatively sound considering the state of his feet, maybe a tiny bit short, but even and fairly comfortable. He threw a shoe and when it was reset the farrier shortened and reset the other front. He was immediately toe pointing lame and has been for ten days now. The farrier's been back out and applied a wedge pad, then back out again and pulled both fronts. Today the horse developed a 2" long horizontal crack at the coronet band. There's no drainage and it's not sensitive. I'm waiting to hear back from both the vet and farrier. Does the crack fit with founder? What else could cause it? Could it be related to his feet having been soaked daily?

Gravels will pop out at the coronary band followed usually by some drainage. Has the horse shown any relief since the blowout? I have seen quite a few that looked like laminitis, then blew out as a gravel. Just keep the area clean, not too many soaks ,as just straight water out of the hose works wonders. Good Luck! Gary

I've been crossing fingers and toes for this horse to blow an abcess, but there was no drainage earlier when it first appeared and I immediately panicked and assumed (bad word!) that he's foundered and his foot's falling off. But, it's draining a bit of gunky stuff now. :D He does seem more comfy on that foot, but that wasn't the one he'd been pointing anyway. It was his RF that he was so sore on, and that has a sensitive bulge on the outside of his hoof wall and the wall itself is almost waxy in that area. Here's hoping he pops something out of there soon. I just don't want to think that I've got a sweet, good looking four year old with something so nasty as founder. Thanks.
