Hi, I am stumped. I bought a sweet little QH mare which has many signs problems with her feet.
I am going to take some photos after my farrier is here tomarrow to help show what I am up against.
She has wide vertical cracks up both front hoofs. Apparently she has had these for 10 years and has been kept shod year round. The last owner neglected a regular shoeing and they split wider but I am hoping I can correct this with proper diet and hoof care. She was obese when I brought her home but now lives on a hay diet only and is looking great.
She also shows signs of foundering, however remains sound.
The cracks are more surface then anything and dont show signs of pain.
Can cracks such as these be cronic ??
Trying to keep this short but to give an idea of the horses history as well.
Her Dam apparently developed the same cracks after foundering. Apparently the dam foundered while in labor with this foal. I am wondering if its possible for a foal to founder at birth and if this condition is something I can work to correct or if I just need to take care of what I have, and hope for he best.
I am starting her on a supplement to increase the quality of hoof and promote growth to help correct.
Any advice would be appreciated..its driving me crazy..
