View Full Version : 2month mini foal, needing hoofs trimmed pics added

hello, i need advice on my 2 month old mini colt this is my first mini foal
i have only had big horses up till now this colt is long and needs a trim
hes long in the toe and has no heel
in minis i guess they dont weigh enough to ware them down
will he as time goes get a heel? and how often should he be trimed ?
this will be his first trim

I'm not a trimmer so take with a grain of salt, but looks to me like he's long all around not just toes, he has heels that are way to long as well and looks like their ready to start turning under. Looks like his frog is not contacting the ground. I'd say he needs a trim, maybe a little at a time not a drastic one.

It's not drastic to trim off the excess hoof. Trim the heels to the widest part of the frog ,and the whiteline on this guy is a perfect guide. Alittle roll to the go and he's good to go! Luck, Gary

I agree! Those heels and toes are both quite long. Heels are meant to be near the ground, as this little guy's will be once he gets trimmed. I agree, too, that removing it all would be fine. It's all excess, and those little frogs will benefit from touching the ground again :) .
