My mare has a chronic heel crack LH due to an old pasture injury. She has had the heel floated twice and she is now in a modified straight bar shoe on the LH only. She was layed up for 9 months due to LF suspensory injury. When we reached the trot phase of her leg up, the heel crack LH began to widen.

She also has a weak stifle on the left, exacerbated by the fact that she was sore due to the crack and rested the LH constantly. Her feet seem excessively long to me behind. She's also started toe stubbing. My farrier says she's a big horse and she needs alot of foot under her (she's a big 16.2 warmblood, weighing nearly 1300 lbs).

My questions are: Is it standard practice to put a bar shoe on one foot only? Secondly, wouldn't a horse with a stifle weakness need a shorter toe or facilitated breakover in order not to overly stress the stifle? Thirdly, the heel crack was floated in March and it still has not grown down significantly. Would that indicate that there is a lever effect going on with the length of the foot, which is causing the crack to not grow down?

I will try to get some pictures to post by this evening. Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Pictures are invaluable; please share them when you're able!

I have a young pony with a locking stifle issue; his hind hooves do tend to get long out front, and I have very much found that keeping those toes where they belong helps him tremendously with the stifle locking issue, so you are most certainly right about that!

When getting pictures, be sure to get the camera very close to the ground for side and front shots, and be sure to get some sole shots as well.
