View Full Version : Shedding a frog?

A few times while trimming a little excess off the frog, the entire thing tends to separate revealing a "new frog" snuggled underneath. In those cases, I have helped the old frog out a bit with the knife and have removed it, and it doesn't take much cutting.
How common is this? One good ole boy, a cud chewing shoer told me that, "Yeah, sure! They're supposed to shed like that ever' seven months!" I made no comment; just glared at him.

I've seen this happen before but, for me it's not a usual occurance. I do like you and just go ahead and clean it up and let it go. I haven't had any ill effects from it.

I see it quite often, but one thing i saw a bit back which was not so common was a cobs feet that's frogs had been Gnawed at by a rat!!!!!All four feet had been chewed,it was happening when the horse was stabled at night and to be fair the rat had done a pretty tidy job,the rear frogs were trimmed to a flat plane complete with the little teeth marks that rats leave.:eek::eek::eek:

I've seen frogs sloughed (sp?) off before. No big deal if the horse doesnt leak or show any signs of pain. I tend to see it more in horses that havent had regular trimming, though I've had some regulars do it, too.

I see it pretty often but I haven't seen on every horse or noticed it happening at any regular interval.

I generaly notice shedding frogs more when damp/wet after an extended period of dry. Don't see often in horses stabled a lot.

I see it most on horses that are on long intervals between shoeings/trimmings. I will generally just remove the old frog and haven't had any issues doing so.
As Clint said I also see it more often coming out of fall into winter, when it gets wet here in CA!
