I just had my farrier out this morning for my horse, and we found that she has either WLD or something similar.

Here's some background on her:

Previously foundered, no rotation in x-rays.
Fully recovered from bout of laminitis
Kept on 5-6 week schedule

Presented with the following to farrier this morning:
Pulse
Coronary band heat
Hoofwall separation, 2" up the front of the hoof
Foot showing signs of WLD was hard, no moisture (farrier said it was like trying to cut petrified wood). Couldn't take nippers and easily trim, hoof knife sounded like you were tapping it against cement.

My farrier did the following:
Cut section of hoof (1.5 - 2" high, 3" wide)
Created pocket

He recommended that I:
Spray solution of 70% bleach, 30% water on hoof
Leave her inside, and in a heavily bedded stall
Give few grams of Bute to make her comfortable

I have my vet coming out today to do x-rays and do a diagnosis of what exactly is ailing her.

My major question would be if horses that have WLD, do they ever become sound enough to do disciplines such as the Jumpers or Eventing? (This mare is a 7 year old Registered Paint, mostly QH breeding).

Any suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Given a proper trim and a chance to grow it out, there's no reason that section of hoof shouldn't grow right out and leave a healthy hoof behind. Figuring out the reason she developed this to begin with will also help make sure it doesn't happen again, and make sure that she will grow a tightly attached hoof wall.

No Bleach. Bleach dissolves protein- guess what hoof is made of? ;)

If it really is WLD the foot needs support. That means a shoe more likely a barshoe better yet a heartbar shoe. Then ALL the diseased wall needs to come off.

If your horse is allready lame and needs bute you need to find a better solution.

What has worked to treat our episodes of WLD is Absorbene Hooflex Thrush Remedy. You need to be dedicated at cleaning the area out and treating it with something like Thrush Remedy everyday for a while. As was mentioned before, do not use bleach. Instead, use the bleach to clean your hoof pick so you don't spread WLD to any other horses you may also use that pick on.
