I have a 14 year old red roan QH gelding who has had chronic thrush since I bought him two years ago. It comes and goes, and I find it gets worse in the summer when it is dry, which is weird. He's outside in a sand pen unless the weather is really bad. I have tried pretty much every thrush product my tack shop sells, but usually I use ThrushBuster, which seems to work a little better than the rest. I treat his feet with it about every other to every three days, the thrush doesn't go away but at least it doesn't get worse - most of the time. Last week it got really yucky though, and part of his frog got eaten away. I stuck cotton ***** soaked in thrushbuster in the grooves and where it got eaten but he's gotten pretty footsore - he won't take his right lead even though that's usally his good lead. He's since had his feet done and my farrier put a different type of shoes on his back feet (the bad ones) that have tabs and now he seems to be doing better but he's still a bit sore and the trush is still there. What can I do/try to get rid of this thrush infestation?
Also, this may be an old wives' tale, but I heard or read somewhere that horses with unusual colors are more prone to foot issues. Is this true?
