This is a TB racehorse I do. 12 Months ago the horse overeached and subsequent care was not the best.
Foot is showing some deformity and the hole at the top bleeds whenever hes fast worked. The scar tissue is bulging out at the coronary band and the hoof wall is not attached to the coronary band below the hole.

Fitted a bar shoe and floated the heel. Has anyone come across anything like it? Any ideas are welcome as to treatment as well as shoeing.

I would put on a shoe with Quarter clips ,weld a bar across from in front of the crack to the medial heel and pad the sole ,but cut the pad so the area below the lateral heel is free,or floated ..then remove most of the area back from the crack as far up to the coranary as possible ...not down to sencetive laminie ,and inspect the crack for dirt .
Then using vettec patch the wall 3/4 of the way up and over the crack ,but not down to the shoe.
It seem that you could have an absess there that has started about 2" below the coranary in the crack itself and has burt out up top..

only my thoughts from what i can see on the pictures.

Thanks Ray for that. I don't think an abcess is the problem but like your ideas on addressing the crack.

I'd like to know if you ar anyone has dealt with a similar injury to the coronet and if its possible to address it with surgery?

The bar shoe is a good plan. I'd recommend clips as well as anything else you can think of to stablize.

This was the job Ian did on Quality Road. Unfortunately he had to be scratched from Ky Derby. I'd recommend watching all of his youtube vids as well as checking out his website www.tenderhoof.com

Is the best quarter crack man I know;)

I have a few horses on my books with the same type of injury ...your question would interest me also ..

Is it possible to cut the coanary open again ,even after years and bring the band back together so that at least (even if deformed) at least an open crack from the injury is closed??
I donīt mean fresh or quarter crack as such ,but injuries.??

Regards Ray Knightley,farrier.germany.ray i to like your idea but if there is any fungus in there if you put a patch on it how are you going to treat it would you not just lace crack instead with the package you had in mind. jmo bryan e

when i do this then there is nothing to lace left of the wall and the crack is cut out and free of any dirt (fungus) The patch is then just down about 2" under the coranary band and builds a bridge to both detached areas .the bridge can be made with IM or wax can be dug out after vettec sets.
The crack is floating and takes no weight at all after this ...
works only on fresh cracks ...this one seems to be older and because of a injury...so my question about recutting..

Regards R.K

I will make pictures next chance so it is a bit clearer..

Took the horse to the vets on Monday. Xrayed and ultrasounded. Took a sample of the grunge in the hole. So far inconclusive. Did notice that the shape of the crack is irregular. Its in an S shape rather than straight.
Feels like I've wasted a day:rolleyes:
Results from biopsy due tomorrow.

Will formulate a plan then:cool:

Neat job on the shoe Ron. What was the story behind the injury?

What were the thoughts behind the bar up the centre?

Still no answer from the vet. No idea yet on the results of the culture.
Checked the wound today and is looking a little better.

Ron is that a recut on an old story or a resection because of a new crack or injury?
