Does any body know of a flux/rod kit designed for forgewelding aluminium? A few years ago somebody posted it on here and I forget what it is...
or does anyone know what flux and filler rod i should get to forge weld ali?
Thanks,
Jason

I use swan ali weld, comes with a wire in the pot. Used it to make the shoe below:

Jason it's been quite a few years since i welded ali in a gas forge but this stuff worked great. it's made by Forney welding products out of Fort Collins Colorado. i did it just like Smitty is showing . flux put the coil on and put it in the forge. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj36/djmurray7/ljason001.jpg

nowadays i weld all my ali with the oxy/ace torch using an ali arc welding rod by opti weld works real good. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj36/djmurray7/ljason002.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj36/djmurray7/ljason003.jpg

hope this helps.

I just use a flux core rod I pick up at the local supply house. Easy to use but I will have to find out the make, I try to post it later.

Just got off the phone with my supplier you can get them from him. Turk's farrier supply @ 302-270-3549 or he said he gets them from Around the Anvil East which I do not have the # for but it is in the supply guide from AFJ. I have had a really great success rate with this rod, he could not remember the maker but said he will look in the am. Sorry

Welco #10. Look for it at a welding supply.

Thanks guys. I'll run this stuff down and melt, i mean make something--
Are you setting up two halves of the frog doodad, putting an even sloped scarf and letting the draw pull the melted rod into the void? How tight (or "not tight") should the scarved ends be before welding. do you put the coil directly next to the lapped ends or about a half inch away like in smitty's picture?
Thanks,
Jason

I bought some fluxed rod, and after some fiddling and smashing it flatter, was able to get a shoe to stick. However ,the puddle is not drawing under the scarves well. Am i not clean enough or are my scarves to tight or to loose?
