: Hi,

: Yesterday I was getting my mare shod, and when the farrier removed her shoe and pad and began cutting out the frog and sole, the frog basically desinigrated and started to bleed. The vet happened to be in the area so she stopped by and we cleaned the wound and bandaged. Now my mare is on antibiotics for 5 days and I have to replace the banage daily. Does this normally happen when horses wear pads and how long does in take for the frog to grow back?

This is the main reason that we do not like to use pads. If your horse needs pads for protection, either try a pad with Equithane sole pack under it, and cover back (so nothing can get in) or try just Equithane sole pack instead. Wait until everything is healed and clean though. Frog growth is hard to determine, your farrier would be better able to answer, as he/she is familiar with average growth on your horse. But it will grow back, if you take care of it now.
Good Luck.
