: My 25 year old QH/Clydesdale cross has suddenly become lame in his RT front foot. It has been extremmely wet and muddy here so I am worried about possible thrush. Since he has never had any hoof problems I am not sure what to look for. His frog seems soft but he also has really soft coronary bands and also a V shaped raised area maybe a crack on the front of his hoof. He limps on it and holds the foot up some. I have not smelled any foul odor and the hoof does not feel hot nor does the leg look swollen.
He could have bruised it, have a puncture wound, or as you said, perhaps thrush or an abcess. I would get him out of the mud and wet and get the foot dry and keep it clean. Check, over the next day or so for heat, increased digital pulse, or swelling. If he is no better within 24 hours, call you vet. Actually, you might want to at least touch base , now, with your vet, so he/she is "in the loop".
